Day 12: Mexico’s Independence Day!

T

Today was Mexico’s Independence Day! It is on days like these that I get homesick. I wish I were in Mexico eating ALL the delicious food we have. But it is also on days like these that I realize how lucky I am to be here. To be honest, I’ve also come to love this beautiful country.

Today was also one of those days when everything just happens. I hit my head when I was trying to get inside the car (see how clumsy I am?). I had a headache afterwards but nothing serious. I dropped my phone and now it was a small crack inside the screen. I dropped my thermo and broke the lid. I got some sad sad news. I guess I’ve had better days.

I was pissed off. I let my mind rant about everything and anything. Suddenly and unexpectedly, I was aware of a couple of things, 1) I was choosing to be mad 2) I could change my attitude. In the past I would’ve been frustrated for the rest of the day. This time, however, I chose to let it go. I don’t know exactly what happened but in that moment I just knew that those things were not important at all. I’m so glad these thoughts came into my mind when I needed them the most. They changed the rest of my day.

Day 11: NOT the perfect day to wear a skirt.

M2

Okay, so the weather in Utah has been surprisingly good up until now. Since these last two weeks were sunny and breezy I thought it was a good idea to wear a skirt to school. Wow Diana… so wrong!

Past midday, the clouds were starting to hide the sun behind them. The next thing I know is that the sky is falling to pieces. At some point it was hailing so hard that going outside a building could’ve been considered a safety hazard (okay, not really 🙂 ). Unfortunately, I had a PES meeting to go to and I had to leave the warmness of the library and go outside. Like I said, not the perfect day to wear a skirt.

By the end of the day I had a sore throat. I ignored because obviously that’s the way it’s going to get fixed. The worst part of it is that around 6 p.m. the sun came out again. And it was bright and strong!! Utah, I thought we were past the crazy weather changes… I guess not.

P.S. Please pay not attention to my hair. It was dripping wet at some point during the day 🙂

Week 2: Acc. Jr. Core

Day 6: Labor Day

Today it literally was Labor Day. For most people Labor Day is the holiday when they get together around a nice bonfire and eat s’mores and relax all day. For me… well, I went to work and then, for the rest of the day, I did homework. Surprise surprise.

Even so, it was a good day. I ate Chinese food with my sister… and I wasn’t reading any of my accounting books! We ran some errands we had pending and then we stayed home for the rest of the day.

Day 7: First Waren case deadline

Today we had to turn in the first part of the Waren case solution. We finished the first portion on Saturday, so it was all ready by the time we had to turn it in. It was kind of sad that all we got from those many hours of work was a signature. Oh wait! I guess we also got some knowledge too… well… maybe… Overall, it was a busy day… too many trips to too many places.

Day 8: Career Options day/Meet the Firms

From the moment I was told that on Wednesday we had Career Options day, I knew that day wouldn’t be an easy day. I mean, I’ve only been in the Jr. Core for two weeks and I’m supposed to figure out my future already? To my surprise, the conference was interesting and the panelists were great. I guess I’ve never wrapped my mind around the fact that accountants can work in any kind of industry. That’s one of the reasons I love my major.

On Wednesday we also had Meet the Firms. This is basically a Career fair for the Marriott School students. This fair was held at the Marriott Center and it was huge. It was also frightening. Jobs, decisions, future… I’m not ready yet. On the bright side, firms get really excited about BYU students.

Day 9: Just another day…

It was a ‘normal’ day but don’t get me wrong, I love normal days. The day was full of homework to do and of projects to work on. I think I left the library around 11:00 p.m. Like a said… it was a normal day.

Day 10: Wow! It’s only 1:30 p.m.

Okay… this is how pathetic my life is. On Friday I was super stocked that our group meeting ended at 1:30 p.m. And to top it off we weren’t meeting on Saturday. What?! SOOO HAPPYYYY!

I had plenty of reading to do, but when I went home, instead of starting my HW early, I decided to use my limited time perusing clothing catalogs. Thank you J.Crew, LOFT, and all of the really enchanting but very distracting other clothing stores that keep sending me mail! I wanted to feel guilty but it was a very well-deserved break.

Week 1: Acc. Jr. Core

Day 1: What did I just do?

Okay, I’m not going to lie, the Jr. Core Orientation was intimidating. The faculty started the meeting with a speech of how amazing the Accounting program is and that it was basically our responsibility to continue the legacy that the Marriott School of Business has established for the past 12 years. I mean, how do you even respond to that? Then a lot of ‘first assignment of the Jr. Core’ (that day I left with eight first assignments… I thought it was funny!) I met my group and immediately started making plans for meetings.

They took professional pictures of each one of us, so we could start a Linked In account. It was terrible. I was all nervous, I was wearing a skirt, the stool was too tall, I forgot to put my blazer on.. oh well. We had a lot of talks about dealing with stress, adjusting to new things, and working in teams. I think the best part of the day was the free lunch I got. But then again, food is always the highlight of my days :).

Day 2: Waren Case

It was the second day of classes and I was already tired. I had to stay up late the night before. That day I went to class to find out what my very first Jr. Core project was going to be: The Waren Case. I don’t even… know… wait, what?

The Waren Case is a 30-hours project that helps you visualize the flow of accounting transactions and financial statements of an entity. The packet was heavy and I was completely sure I didn’t even remember what is a credit and a balance. I guess I just have to push trough it… and dust off my ACC 310 notes.

Day 3: Is this our prize for not dropping out yet?

On Wednesday I arrived to the classroom and to my surprise, there were welcome-back bags on every desk of the room. Of course, it was an accounting company wishing us the best for the upcoming year (and they might have mentioned their recruiting dates for the semester…hmmm…subtle). When my teammate arrived and saw the little bags he said “is this our prize for not dropping out yet?” Yes, yes it is. The best thing… The bag included a coupon for a free sandwich. This is what I’m talking about 🙂

More group meetings. They seem to be lasting longer… I wonder if this is how it’s going to be the rest of the semester. Probably.

Day 4: Pit Crew Challenge

It was a fun day! Classes were cancelled and we had to go to the stadium parking lot to find… drumroll, please… a race car. Yes! Look at us… cool accountants! 🙂 We had to changed the tires of the car… with some obstacles, of course. I learned a lot of things and was reminded of some more other things. I was the sign holder, mainly because I couldn’t do any of the other positions without harming others or myself :P.

Day 5: International Perspective

We learned about International accounting standards with the help of a quite confusing game. When the faculty told us the catch of the game, I just thought it was so brilliant. I would share the lesson with you, but I wouldn’t want to spoil the fun and mystery of it for you. You’ll just have to figure it out guys! The day ended with a group meeting.

Before this day I had never left the library at 6:30 p.m. on a Friday. I think I better get used to it, and the sooner the better. The take away from this week… Yes, it will be hard, and it will also be worth it.

Hugs,
Diana

Sunday funday

Today was a good day. We had stake conference at the Marriott Center and I got to hear from Elder Ballard, Sister Burton and Bishop Davies. The messages were so good and very inspiring. I felt that each one of them said that things that I needed to hear. These last couple of weeks have been C-R-A-Z-Y and I’ve been extremely busy. In my poor attempt to get all of my school/work/clubs things done, I’ve failed to acknowledge the things that matter the most in this life.

This thought made me remember something that I learned in my accounting class last semester (don’t worry… it’s not an accounting principle). My professor told us that in life there are glass balls and rubber balls. If you let go of a rubber ball, it will bounce and come back. Glass balls, on the other hand, will break if you let them go. All things in life fall into one of these categories. Ever since this class, and specially when I have many many things to get done, I ask myself, Diana, is this a rubber or glass ball? Trust me on this one, this method will keep your priorities straight.

On a less serious note, I’m obsessed with this handbag. It’s very 1950’s and oh so classy! I’m not even kidding when I say that I’ve slept with this handbag right by my side. I just love it so much!

That being said, I’m off to bed. Hope you had a great Sunday too!

Hugs,
Diana
